Hey guys, I’ve posted a few times in the General Discussions forum, but first time among the pier and surf fishing experts. I’ve fished up and down the Saint Joe for steelhead year around and salmon in the fall. Used a lot of things, like wobble glo, corkies, oslos and even little cleos and have had success. But fresh spawn about the size of a quarter in a square net seems to work the most consistently with me. When I get a hen, I always take the spawn out, make sure there’s no blood in it, and then soak it with plain old mineral oil. It seems to be the most natural and I gotta say, I’ve had success with it when other people next to me using other kinds of spawn don’t (usually but not always). Anyway, the drawback of mineral oil is that you can keep it in the freezer only about 3 months or so (and even less in the fridge) before it goes bad or gets freezer burn. Do you guys have any good suggestions for preparing spawn using plain borax or salt and sugar. There are a million recipes and I have NO IDEA what to use. Also, I’ve never used spawn off the piers, only chucked spoons and fished shrimp under a bobber. When you fish spawn off the bottom are the spawn bags about the same size as when you fish in the river? Thanks, much appreciated.

Built by Ernie Cavitt who comes on this board from time to time. Just paired it with a 3000 Stradic, it’s gonna sling a jig into the next time zone. The blank is a St. Croix in case anyone is wondering.
